The Crystal class series comprises six all-purpose refrigerated vessels . The ship type was built between 1991 and 1994 by the Belgian Boel shipyard.
history
In 1990, a consortium of shipping companies F. Laeisz , Cool Carriers, Ahlers and Turbana / Uniban commissioned Boelwerf in Temse to develop and build a fast and versatile type of reefer ship. The class got its name from the prefix "Crystal". The lead ship was the Crystal Prince , which entered service in January 1992 , followed a month later by the Crystal Pride . Two sister ships followed in 1992, and two more in 1994. The first two ships were managed by the Belgian shipping company Ahlers when they were taken over and were chartered by Turbana, which they used in the banana service of Central and South America. The management of the following four ships was in the hands of the Hamburg shipping company F. Laeisz, they were chartered by the Swedish shipping company and refrigerated ship pool Cool Carriers.
description
The six ships have deckhouses arranged aft and three main holds with a volume of around 10,000 m 3 , which are optimized for pallet transport. The holds have three tween decks and extra-small gas-tight hatches closed. There are also two side ports on the port side. The cooling system is designed for both deep-freeze loads (−30 ° C) and fruit loads in the plus range such as bananas (+13 ° C). In addition, the cooling system is designed for operation with a controlled atmosphere (CA).
There are additional spaces on deck for 68 TEU or 34 FEU refrigerated containers as well as four hydraulic deck cranes. The crane, which is located amidships, is suitable for handling containers and can lift 34 tons. The other three very flat cranes optimized for quick pallet handling (pallet swingers) have a lifting force of 8/10 tons with a radius of 18 or 14 m. They work semi-automatically and have been cleverly arranged to reduce the swivel angle and enable fast turnaround times. The load capacity of the reefer ships is around 7725 tons (other sources give 8140 tdw).
Machine system
The main engine is a low-speed B&W two-stroke diesel engine of the type 7S50MC with 8100 kW rated power at 123 rpm, which acts on a fixed pitch propeller with five blades. The on-board electrical system is supplied by four Mitsui B&W 5L23 / 30 auxiliary diesels with 650 kW each.
Cargo cooling system
This type of reefer ship was equipped with a cargo cooling system to cool all three holds with a total of around 4500 m² of floor space. The refrigeration system and the circulating fan for the cold air supply are designed for a maximum of 90 air changes, and a 2-fold fresh air change is also possible. The specified temperature range is +15 ° C for transporting bananas and −30 ° C for frozen cargo.
All ships of this type were built for operation with a controlled atmosphere (CA), hence the extremely small hatch openings. The cargo holds were extremely well sealed, especially in the areas of the supply and exhaust air. There are additional lines (measuring and supply lines) to the individual temperature zones of the cargo hold in order to be able to charge these areas with nitrogen generated from the ambient air. Samples of the hold atmosphere are taken via the measuring lines in order to regulate the specified nominal data (e.g. 3% O 2 , 5% CO 2 , 92% N 2 ). The necessary technical equipment for automatic CA control and nitrogen generation is only provided in separate systems during CA transport on deck and is connected to the electrical power supply and to the supply and measurement lines.
The cargo holds with a total of twelve compartments are divided into seven temperature zones and are 2.2 meters high to allow forklift truck operation. The hatch covers of the three hatches were deliberately kept small (8.76 × 5.10 m) in order to keep the atmospheric losses of the holds due to the CA as low as possible. A special feature of this type of ship is that the hatch covers act as weather protection during cargo handling. The hatch serves as a roof and curtains have been integrated for side protection. Loading and unloading is still possible, as the three sideways pallet cranes only swivel in this height area under the weather protection roof.
