Leopold Mayer (conductor)

Leopold Mayer (born October 25, 1918 in Vienna ; † January 8, 2003 in Linz ) was an Austrian conductor , artistic director and musicologist.

Live and act

Leopold Mayer studied musicology at the University of Vienna and conducting with Hans Swarowsky at the Vienna Music Academy. From 1947 to 1949 he was musical director of the Steyr City Theater , and from 1949 he worked in Linz . He was choir director as well as opera and operetta conductor at the Landestheater Linz . 1961 to 1964 head of opera at this theater, where he a. a. directed the world premiere of Igo Hofstetter's operetta Roulette der Herzen .

From 1963 Mayer was also head of the ORF operetta department, and from 1968 until his retirement in 1984 for serious music. He has conducted numerous symphony concerts at home and abroad, many of them in the Brucknerhaus in Linz .

From 1965 to 1968, Mayer was also the musical director of the Mörbisch Seefestspiele and conducted operettas in Munich and Berlin with Marika Rökk a . a. He directed operetta concerts in Brussels , Vienna , Salzburg and Linz. From 1961 to 1990 he was also the conductor of the Linz Concert Society.

Mayer was the founder of the ORF Chamber Orchestra, with which he gave concerts at home and abroad. From 1955 to 1984 he was head of the conducting class, the orchestra and the opera school at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz .

From 1984 to 1989 he was the founding president of the Friends of Linz Music Theater Association .
