The Reclining Nude (also Nu couché (French) or Reclining Nude (English)) is a painting by Amedeo Modigliani from 1917.

description

The painting shows an unclothed woman lying in an interior on a dark red sofa and a turquoise blue pillow in the tradition of Titian's Venus de Urbino . It was painted in oil on canvas in 1917 and is 92 centimeters wide and 60 centimeters high. The face of the stretched out young woman with her almond-shaped eyes, bared breasts and shame is turned directly towards the viewer. However, their eyes are closed. The lying nude was shown in 1917 in the Paris gallery by Berthe Weill together with other nudes. There was a crowd at the exhibition; probably the picture looked scandalous to the gallery visitors at the time. On the same day, the police ordered the removal of the representation of the nude along with other other files. There are around 420 paintings by the artist, who died at the age of 35.

On November 9, 2015, the painting was sold at Christie's in New York City for $ 170.4 million to industrialist and art collector Liu Yiqian . After Picasso's Les femmes d'Alger version "O", it was the second most expensive picture ever sold at auction. It has since been housed in the Long Museum in Chongqing , which was founded by Liu Yiqian.
