The Boll Hagen Moorwald is 140 hectares, the largest contiguous forest area in the district of Wesermarsch, in Lower Saxony . The city of Wilhelmshaven bought the area in 2005 as a compensation area for business settlements.
geography
The Bollenhagener Moorwald is located in Jade-Südbollenhagen in a former meadow area of the Jade . The subsoil consists of clay deposits from the North Sea. This is where the moor developed.
Since 2008, an extensive, site-appropriate forest of oaks, birches and willow bushes has been created around a 150-year-old mixed oak forest. In addition, rush swamps and extensively used grassland areas are being developed.
history
Wilhelmshaven required compensation area for the development of commercial areas, also with regard to the JadeWeserPort . An agreement was signed in 2003 through the agency of the Wesermarsch administrative district and the city to regulate the supraregional cooperation. In 2005, 140 hectares of fallow land and grassland were acquired. The area agency commissioned the inventory and together with the Lower Saxony state forest and the environmental authorities, an overall concept was agreed.
Recreation
All actors agreed that the area should also be available for local recreation. When the afforestation began in 2008, the children of the local school and kindergarten were allowed to help and plant "their" trees. In addition to well-paved forest roads, a 300-meter-long boardwalk was laid over a wet meadow and hiking trails paved with shredded material. Sculptures by regional artists can be seen along the paths. In a former construction trailer , the BollWerk , there is an exhibition about the special features of the landscape and the development of the project. Guided tours are also offered regularly from here. In 2014 a treetop tower was built in the grove near the bulwark. This extends over four levels up to a height of 14 meters and offers a panoramic view of the Bollenhagener Moorwald.
