Weekly market on Lienhardplatz

The Lienhard space is an inner-city market and town square in Wuppertal District Vohwinkel , the only one in this third largest district. It was named in 1935 after the writer Friedrich Lienhard (1865–1929). Before that, the square was given the name Marktplatz between 1895 and 1910 .

description

The square, built in 1894, is said to be on the site on which the Vowynkele estate was located - the primordial cell of the formerly independent city and today's district of Vohwinkel. Now the square is between Bahnstrasse and Kaiserstrasse , Lienhardstrasse is part of the square and is also used as a parking lot. It is close to the Düsseldorf – Elberfeld railway line and Vohwinkel train station . After the war, the square was used all the time, but it was pretty dilapidated until it was redesigned in 1992/93. Since then it has been presented with new paving and lush vegetation.

Every year the square is integrated into the Vohwinkel flea market . Traditionally, the “Vohwinkel Day” and the neighborhood festival take place here on the Saturday before the flea market and then go seamlessly into the construction work for the Vohwinkel flea market.

Every Saturday and Tuesday morning there is a weekly market where fruit and vegetables and other goods are sold. But also funfairs and Christmas markets are held here.

Construction project

The development on the edge of the square is to be redesigned according to the wishes of the Wuppertal administration, for which they selected one of two favored proposals in spring 2007. This proposal from a Sauerland entrepreneur envisages a residential and commercial building complex with doctors' surgeries and smaller retail spaces. The city administration presented the first plans in 2002.

The other proposal from an investor from Wülfrath was for a shopping mall with significantly more retail space for residential development. The losing investor had the award examined and in the second instance the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court (OLG) decided on December 13, 2007 that the tender should have been made across Europe and must be repeated.
