Lieper Castle

The Lieper Burg is a castle wall in the municipality of Thelkow in the Rostock district , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania ; it is located in a forest in the area of the southern upper slope of the Recknitz Valley not far from the village of Liepen and belongs to the LSG "Lieper Burg". The early Slavic hilltop castle from the 8th century stands on a spur-like protrusion twenty meters above the Recknitz Valley . The castle is not mentioned in a document. Their importance is likely to have arisen from the location on the Recknitz and thus on the tribal borders of the Liutizen .

The castle was built in one go. The castle wall was made of sand on the surface of the earth and bordered in the core by stone packings. It is 13 m wide at the foot, and deep trenches also protect the facility. The inner surface of the Lieper Castle is relatively large compared to many other Slavic castle complexes in northern Germany, its diameter is over a hundred meters. The existence of two entrances back then, as they are visible today, has not been proven with certainty. There are no traces of violent destruction of the castle. The ceramic finds, objects decorated with comb stitch decorations and wavy ribbons, belong to the " Feldberg type ".

The castle complex was mapped by Ewald Schuldt in 1958 . Excavations have only been carried out to a limited extent.

The “Burgsee” located in the same forest is named after Lieper Burg. Not far to the south is the Teufelssee nature reserve near Thelkow .
