history
Baseball found its way from the United States via Cuba to the Caribbean in the 1860s. The first official baseball game in Cuba took place in 1874. During the Ten Years' War (1868–1878), many Cubans fled the island and immigrated to the Dominican Republic . Among other things, they brought the sport "Béisbol" with them.
From 1900 "Béisbol" grew into a popular recreational sport. The Tigres del Licey were founded in 1907, the Estrellas Orientales in 1911 and the Leones del Escogido in 1921 . That year the Dominican Republic's first professional baseball league was founded. This could only last until 1937.
In 1951, today's professional league Liga Dominicana de Béisbol Invernal (LIDOM) was founded with a new format as the winter league, the so-called second era of Béisbol in the Dominican Republic .
