Talonavicular ligament

The ligamentum talonaviculare (Latin for 'ankle-scaphoid ligament'), also known as the ligamentum talonaviculare dorsale , is a broad, flat ligament that belongs to the ligamentous apparatus of the lower ankle and extends from the neck ( collum tali ) of the ankle ( talus ) pulls towards the dorsal surface of the navicular bone ( os naviculare ). It is covered by the tendons of the toe extensor muscle. Medial to the ligament talonaviculare lies the Delta band .

The talonavicular ligament and the bifurcate ligament dorsally reinforce the anterior joint capsule ( articulatio talocalcaneonavicularis ) of the lower ankle. These and other ligaments - mainly the ligamenta calcaneocuboidea dorsalia, the ligamentum tarsi dorsalia, the ligamenta tarsometatarsalia dorsalia et plantaria and the ligamenta metatarsalia dorsalia et plantaria - span the joint spaces in the area of the tarsometatarsal joint row and form amphiarthrotic joint connections.

The anatomical and histological properties of the talonavicular ligament suggest that this ligament plays a role in the power transmission in the winch mechanism ("windlass mechanism"), which is crucial for propulsion when walking.

It is a band that is violated quite often. A rupture of the talonavicular ligament can result, for example, from an acute plantar flexion / inversion trauma, with the ligament often tearing off a piece of bone from the upper area of the navicular bone at the same time . Such fractures are the most common navicular fractures.

Possible consequences of an injury or weakness of the talonavicular ligament, such as whether this results in excessive movement of the talonavicular joint , have so far been little investigated.
