Beek is a place in the Dutch municipality of Berg en Dal . Around 3,675 residents currently live there (as of January 1, 2018).

geography

The village of Beek is located in the east of the Netherlands in close proximity to the German-Dutch border . On the German side there are Wyler and Zyfflich , districts of the Kranenburg community . Beek stretches between the hilly landscape in the south, the Ooijpolder , and the plains in the north. The hills Boterberg and Wylerberg , which are part of the Lower Rhine ridge , rise south of the village .

history

The first traces of settlement on the north-eastern outskirts of Beek have already been detected in Roman times .

Until 1817, Beek was an independent municipality, consisting of the villages Beek, Ubbergen and Nederrijkswald. With effect from January 1, 1818, it was merged with the municipality of Ooij en Persingen to form the new municipality of Ubbergen. In 2007, Beek-Ubbergen was voted the greenest village in the Netherlands. Beek remained part of the municipality of Ubbergen until December 31, 2014 and was referred to as Beek-Ubbergen . On January 1, 2015, Ubbergen was merged with the municipality of Groesbeek , which was renamed Berg en Dal on January 1, 2016 following a referendum.

Until January 1, 2015, Beek was the capital of the municipality of Ubbergen , which merged with Groesbeek and Millingen aan de Rijn to form the new municipality of Groesbeek . A referendum between Berg en Dal and Groesbeek should decide on the new name of the municipality. 50.8% of the voters voted for the municipality name Berg en Dal , which was officially changed on January 1st of the following year.

In the area of ​​the village there are a total of 17 Rijksmonumenten ("Reichsmonumente" in the sense of national monuments) and over 50 Gemeentelijk monuments ("Municipal monuments " of local or regional importance). The vast majority are visible architectural monuments .

  • First of all, the small Bartholomeuskerkje (first documented mention in 1286) and the later Sint-Bartholomaeuskerk (built in 1826) must be mentioned.
  • A special feature is the tram shelter, known today as Salmhuisje , which belonged to the Stollenberg estate. Like the property itself, this tram house was designed in 1892 by the Amsterdam architect Abraham Salm. Various building modules of the shelter were prefabricated in Switzerland and then assembled in Beek.
  • The Villa Severen , built in 1898 by the Nijmegen architect Derk Semmelink with various Art Nouveau elements, is located on Bosweg . The villa "Severen" was inhabited for several years by the sinologist, diplomat and author Robert van Gulik .
  • Last but not least, the six villas designed by the Nijmegen architect Oscar Leeuw should be mentioned. Five of them are concentrated on Ravensberg Street .

Provinciale Weg 325 runs north of the town center and leads from the Wyler border crossing via Nijmegen to Arnhem. In an easterly direction, the Provinzialstraße turns into the Bundesstraße 9, over which you can reach Kranenburg and Kleve . Provinciale Weg 840 extends to the north of Beek and connects the village with Leuth, Kekerdom and Millingen aan de Rijn , which are also subordinate to the municipality of Berg en Dal.

Sports

The Beek-based football club BVC '12 ( Beekse Voetbalclub 1912 ) plays in the sixth highest division in the Netherlands, the Eerste Klasse on Sundays , and in the Vierde Klasse , the ninth highest division , on Saturdays in the 2018/19 season . The club plays its home games in Sportpark 't Groothuis , which is located between Provinciale Weg 325 and the Wylerbergmeer. Adjacent is the tennis club TV De Oorsprong, founded in 1968 .
