Pieter Frans Christiaan "Pyke" Koch (born July 15, 1901 in Beek , † October 27, 1991 in Wassenaar ) was a painter from the Netherlands .

Life

Pyke Koch studied law at the University of Utrecht from 1920 to 1927 , but dropped out in the final phase when he decided to become a painter. He read books, heard lectures on the technique of painting and began experiments himself. The Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam bought a painting by him as early as 1930 . A college friend of Koch was Cola Debrot , who had come from the island of Bonaire , with whom he even shared an apartment. Debrot was a poet and later became an important politician in the Netherlands Antilles .

Koch married Heddy de Geer , a noble relative of the right-wing extremist politician and trade unionist Ernst Voorhoeve . This, and because he 1928-1930 the Italy of Benito Mussolini with admiration (not only of the great works of art over) visited, he got into the circle of the original Flemish fascist association Verdinaso for which magazines he wrote some articles and made drawings. Koch, who was often ill between 1932 and 1945, joined the Chamber of Culture established by the German occupier during the Second World War . This was and still is in the Netherlands as an act of collaboration . That's why Koch fell into disrepute and was all but forgotten. His last work, the third in the series De koorddanser (The tightrope walker), he created in 1980, when he was already leading a rather secluded life in Utrecht. Koch was a pessimistic man who was often dissatisfied with himself, his works and later perhaps also with his political views. He destroyed many of his works himself or redesigned them drastically.

Pyke Koch drowned in his youth the influence of the film art of German Expressionism . Like Gerard Dou in the 17th century , he was a fine painter who painted realistic ideas with a smooth brushstroke. He also appreciated the work of Carel Willink . Like that, Pyke Koch saw himself as a representative of magical realism . Koch was even more inspired by the masters of the Italian Renaissance , namely Andrea Mantegna and Piero della Francesca . Surrealistic, alienating traits, as in Willink, rarely show Koch's works. The themes of his paintings and drawings, which are characterized by strong color contrasts, diverged strongly. He made erotic portraits of women , but also (1960) a portrait of the clergyman Titus Brandsma , who was killed in Auschwitz ; Scenes of prostitutes and their neighborhoods; Action pictures of fair performers; Still lifes , landscapes; he also designed stage sets and postage stamps. Since Koch often took a lot of time for a painting (he was not quickly satisfied), and also destroyed many of his own works, he only left about 100 paintings, which after his death found more and more recognition.

A quote from the artist

A painting is a self-service shop. Everyone pulls out what suits them.
