Lillie Delk Christian (born January 30, 1896 ; † January 1966 in Chicago ) was an American singer who recorded with jazz musicians in the late 1920s and is particularly remembered for her recordings with Louis Armstrong's Hot Four 1928 .

Life

Delk Christian was a cabaret singer; whose singing was characterized by light vibrato . She recorded the standard " Sweet Georgia Brown " for Okeh Records (# 8317) with Johnny St. Cyr in Chicago in March 1926 , and in June 1926 with St. Cyr and Jimmie Noone the tracks "Lonesome and Sorry" and "Baby O ' Mine "(Okeh 8356). In the same month she was a band vocalist for Albert Wynn 'Gut Bucket Five (with Barney Bigard, among others ) ("When", Okeh 8350).

Delk Christian made further recordings in May 1927 with Richard M. Jones ' Jazz Wizards (" Ain't She Sweet ") and again in December with Noone and St. Cyr (" My Blue Heaven ", Okeh 8536). She also recorded “Ain't She Sweet” in 1927 with the pianist Hociel Thomas , as well as “I Must Have That Man”.

At her Okeh session on June 26, 1928, the singer was accompanied by Louis Armstrong's Hot Four (with Jimmie Noone, Earl Hines and Mancy Carr ); the four tracks “You're a Real Sweetheart” (OKeh 8607), “Was It a Dream?”, “Too Busy” and “Last Night I Dreamed You Kissed Me” were created, with the same cast in December 1928 as “ I Can't Give You Anything But Love "/" Sweethearts on Parade "(Okeh 8650) and" I Must Have That Man "/" Baby "(Okeh 8660). In the field of jazz, she was involved in eight recording sessions between 1926 and 1928.

Louis Armstrong was very ingenious to accompany the comparatively unhappy Delk Christian, wrote Gary Giddins ; his "Too Busy!" is one

“Epiphany of contradictions. At first she manages to chirp through the first chorus without the slightest hint of swing , but after an instrumental passage in which Armstrong, Hines and Noone play warmly, Armstrong sneaks up with an improvised scat interlude and now brings it into action. "

arwulf arwulf characterized Delk Christian in Allmusic as a smooth pop jazz singer; However, the eight tracks she recorded in 1928 with Armstrong's Hot Four should be emphasized . One of the best titles in the Okeh sessions was “Too Busy!” With Armstrong's scat vocals , but she also gave melodic contours to the non-jazz-oriented waltz “Was It a Dream?” With her interpretation.
