The Lillydale Lake is an artificial lake in the southern Australian state of Victoria .

It is located near the town of Lilydale , one of the eastern suburbs of Melbourne and is traversed by Olinda Creek . In addition to the lake, wetlands were also created in the surrounding 100 hectare park  . The park offers a number of opportunities for recreational sports.

The lake covers an area of 28 hectares and has a 440 meter long dam wall. There are over ten kilometers of combined footpaths and cycle paths in the park, a common room and meeting points, as well as a "monster" playground, toilets, barbecue and picnic areas. A slipway enables boats without a motor to be used. There are also two areas where dogs can be run off-leash.

history

Parts of the town of Lilydale lie very deep and have always been in danger of being flooded by Olinda Creek.

In 1853 the caretaker James Blackburn saw a facility there to collect drinking water for the supply of Melbourne, but then the Yan Yean Reservoir was built instead .

In 1969 the city council proposed a 65 hectare park and there were also a number of other proposals, but none of them were implemented due to lack of funds. After the flood disaster in September 1984, it was proposed to build the lake to retain rainwater and as a recreational facility. Construction began in 1988 and the facility was finished in June 1990. It was officially opened on July 7, 1990.

The residents of the area use the park to keep fit by hiking, running or cycling.

Lilydale or Lillydale?

Before the amalgamation of various parishes to the Yarra Ranges Shire in 1994, the suburb Lilydale (with an L) was assigned to the Lillydale Shire (with two Ls). It is believed that when the Shire was set up in 1872, the spelling “Lillydale” was simply a typo that was never corrected and is still used today for everything to do with the Lillydale Shire, including Lillydale Lake and that Museum of Lillydale . Everything that has to do with the town of Lilydale is still written with an L.
