The Olinda Creek is a river in the south of the Australian state of Victoria and an important tributary of the Yarra River .
Its sources are in the Dandenongs , then it flows through Lilydale (now a suburb of Melbourne ) and finally into the Yarra River at Coldstream .
History and naming
When the European settlers came to southern Australia, they moved up the valley of Olinda Creek (at that time 'Running Creek' because of its year-round water flow). The official naming began when John Hardy came to Lilydale in 1859/60. When he gave this settlement its name, he also renamed the Running Creek after the daughter `` Alice Olinda '' of the deputy surveyor-general Clement Hodgkinson in Olinda Creek.
Lillydale Lake
Between 1988 and 1990 a dam wall was built in the stream south of Lilydale, where Lillydale Lake was dammed. This lake provides flood protection for the settlements further down the stream. There are important wetlands on the lake and it is also used as an excursion destination.
