Henning J. Claassen

Henning Jörg Claassen (born February 4, 1944 in Lüneburg ) is a German entrepreneur.

Life

After training as an industrial clerk, he booked a freighter passage to California at the age of 20 . There he graduated from high school and completed an economics / psychology degree, which he earned by repairing office machines himself.

In 1967 he returned to Lüneburg and founded his first company in 1971 and Meltex GmbH in 1973. He sold the mechanical engineering company with 240 employees in Lüneburg, 50 employees in Atlanta / USA, worldwide commercial agencies and a turnover of 30 million euros to the American group Nordson Corporation in 1989 . In 1983 he founded the Impreglon Group, which emerged from a Meltex coating company and gradually transformed it into an international service company for surface technology with 37 locations in 15 countries after 1989. The company went public in 2006 and was sold to the Dutch Aalberts Group in 2014 .

In 1989, after a two-year construction phase, Claassen opened the “Hotel Bergström” in Lüneburg, which he expanded into a hotel ensemble with 131 rooms in the following years. Since 2006 it has been the setting for the telenovela " Rote Rosen ". At the end of 2017, Claasen sold its Bergström property to a hotel group.

In February 2010, after two years of extensive restoration, he opened the “Altes Kaufhaus” hotel, his second in the city's historic water district. In the same year the gallery opened in the old department store with its private collection of contemporary art.

After an extensive complete renovation, he opened the “Relais & Chateau Parkhotel de Wiemsel” in Ootmarsum, the Netherlands, in 2015 . In 2017, after a complete renovation, the reopening of the historic “Forsthaus Rote Schleuse” restaurant in Lüneburg followed.

Claassen is socially committed as a sponsor of young company founders and young talents in the cultural field, as a sponsor of an orphanage for tsunami victims in India, founder and sponsor of the "Protect the Victims" initiative, as long-term chairman of the St. Nicolai Community Foundation in his hometown. He is an active sponsor of the Leuphana University of Lüneburg and is involved in support projects for students.

In April 2017 Claassen was made an honorary citizen of the city of Lüneburg.
