Lim Hwee Hua (born February 26, 1959 in Singapore ) is a former Singaporean politician ( PAP ). She is currently the Executive Director of Tembusu Partners Private Limited and Senior Advisor to Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. When she was appointed Minister to the Prime Minister's Office in 2009, she was the first woman to serve in the Singapore cabinet. She was also the second Minister of Finance and Minister of Transport at the same time. Lim lost her seat in parliament in the 2011 general election when she ran for the People's Action Party and was beaten by the Workers' Party of Singapore in her constituency (Aljunied Group Representation Constituency). She then announced that she would withdraw from politics.

education

After graduating from Raffles Institution, Lim received a scholarship to study at the University of Cambridge . She studied mathematics and technology there and graduated in 1981. In 1989, she earned a Masters of Business Administration in Finance from the University of California .

Career

Early career

Lim began her career as an administrative clerk in the ministries of finance, education and law. In 1989 she moved to Swiss Bank Corporation as an investment analyst and to Jardine Fleming in 1992 , where she was Head of Research and Business Development. In 2000, Lim moved to Temasek Holdings . Initially as a managing director for corporate management and later for strategic relationships. While at Temasek Holdings, she served on the boards of PSA International , Keppel Corporation and Mapletree Investments.

Political career

Lim was elected to the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency in both the 1997 and 2001 elections. From April 2002 to August 2004 she was Deputy President of the Parliament and Chair of the Public Finance Committee. Lim was appointed Minister of State for Finance and Transport on August 12, 2004.

In the 2006 general election, Lim ran for the Aljunied Group Representation Constituency and was elected along with George Yeo , Cynthia Phua , Yeo Guat Kwang and Zainul Abidin . On April 1, 2008, she was promoted to Senior Minister of State for Finance and Transport.

When Lim became Minister in the Prime Minister's Office, Second Finance Minister and Second Transport Minister on April 1, 2009, Lim was the first woman in the history of the Singaporean cabinet.

Between 2002 and 2011, Lim was a member of the Central Executive Committee of the PAP and chairman of the party's women's wing. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Singapore Council of Women's Organization (SCWO) on March 31, 2010, and on April 23, 2010, she received the Woman of the Year award.

In the parliamentary elections in 2011 , Lim played in the Aljunied Group Representation Constituency. She lost her constituency to the Workers' Party of Singapore . Because of this, Lim was unable to continue serving in the cabinet. She announced to withdraw from politics.

Post-political career

After retiring from politics, Lim was appointed Non-Executive Director at Jardine Cycle & Carriage in 2011. In October 2011, Lim was appointed Senior Advisor Global Investment Company Co. Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & appointed. A little later in November 2011, Lim was appointed independent non-executive director of Ernst & Young . She was also Honorary Chairman of The Securities Investors Association, Singapore (SIAS) from 2013 to January 2017 .

Personal life

Lim grew up in a family with nine children in Tiong Bahru . Her father was a tea merchant. She is married to Andy Lim, a partner and founder of Tembusu Partners . Together they have a son and two daughters.
