Limba Noastră cea Română ( German  Our Language, Romanian ) is a public holiday in the Republic of Moldova , which has been celebrated on August 31st since 1990. It commemorates August 31, 1989, when Romanian became the official language in Moldova.

On August 27, 1989, there was the largest demonstration in the history of the Moldovan Soviet Socialist Republic with 750,000 participants on the Piața Victoriei (German Victory Square) in Chișinău . The goal was independence from the Soviet Union . But the country had to wait two more years for this. However, a partial success was achieved. A few days later, on August 31, the Soviet made Romanian the official language and decided to return to the Latin alphabet.

Festivities

In Chișinău , the celebrations begin every year at the Monument to Stephen the Great , where representatives of politics and culture lay flowers. Then flowers are also placed on the 60 busts in the neighboring Aleea Clasicilor (German Allee der Klassiker). During the day there is an open air concert in the city with music by Moldovan composers. In 2012, Bălți joined in with a similar event.
