Linda Fried
Linda P. Fried (* 1949 ) is an American geriatrician and epidemiologist at Columbia University in New York City .
Fried initially worked as a legal assistant and social worker . She then studied medicine at Rush Medical College with an MD degree, followed by a Masters of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University . As a doctor, professor ( English faculty physician ) she worked at the department of preventive cardiology of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine before 1986 became head of the local department of geriatric diagnostics. In 1997 she received a professorship for internal medicine there. Most recently, she was director of the Department of Geriatrics and Gerontology and the Center on Aging and Health at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions .
In 2008 she moved to Columbia University . There she is today (as of 2016) Dean of the Faculty of Public Health .
Fried deals with the question of how age-related frailty ( English frailty ) can be prevented. In 1995 she founded the Experience corps , an organization that arranges retirees for voluntary work in elementary schools and kindergartens. She was able to prove that such a commitment measurably maintains memory performance, dexterity and walking speed. At the same time, the educational opportunities of the children in care improve.
In 2012 Fried was awarded the Longevity Prize from the Ipsen Foundation. In 2016 she received the Prix International de l'INSERM . In 2016/2017 Fried was President of the Association of American Physicians . She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine , and will serve on its governing council from 2017-2020.
