Linda Chih-ling Koo (* 1954 in Thailand ) is a Chinese cancer epidemiologist and former lecturer at the University of Hong Kong .

Research work

Linda Chih-ling Koo is known for her studies of indoor air pollution, diet and lung cancer in China . These studies also included researching a link between secondhand smoke and lung cancer, but found no link. She has been criticized for her contacts with the tobacco industry . She assumed that dietary factors caused lung cancer. That made them interesting for the tobacco industry. It was mainly criticized because the tobacco industry indicated other disruptive factors as triggers for lung cancer thanks to its results. In 1989, wrote Covington & Burling - lawyer John Rupp in a confidential memo : " We have again a productive, continuous working relationship with Dr. Linda Koo, who is the most outstanding ETS scientist in Asia . Although Dr. Koo [...] cannot afford to formally join our group should the opportunity to consult with her generate significant profits. “Both Linda Koo and the tobacco industry responded that she had never acted as a paid consultant to the tobacco industry.

In 1992, Linda Koo's colleague, Lam Tai-hung, was found guilty of plagiarizing Koo's questionnaire prepared with her colleague, John Ho, on the study of lung cancer among female Chinese nonsmokers. The ruling was upheld by the appellate court the following year, after which the university finally announced that the case would be investigated by a university committee. The committee found that Lam Tai-hung was not guilty of "shameful or dishonest" conduct. A verdict that Linda Koo and John Ho challenged a year later. On October 24, 1995, the university dismissed this challenge.
