Linda Nicholls

Linda Carol Nicholls (* around 1960) is a Canadian theologian and the first primate to head the Anglican Church of Canada since July 2019 . After Katharine Jefferts Schori, she is the second woman in the United States to serve as a primate of the Anglican Church Fellowship .

Life

Nicholls was educated at Wycliffe College in Toronto and ordained a priest in 1986 . After a curate in Scarborough , she took over the pastoral position in Georgina ( Ontario ) from 1987 to 1991 and in Thornhill from 1991 to 2005 . In the Anglican Church of Canada, Nicholls held various offices and roles. This included dialogue and consultations with the Roman Catholic Church, with the Jewish faith community, and in 2005 she became Vice Chair of the National Muslim Christian Liaison Committee .

Nicholls was elected bishop in 2007 and ordained in this office on February 2, 2008. From 2008 to 2016 she was suffragan bishop in the Anglican Diocese of Toronto, and as regional bishop she led the Trent-Durham area . On February 13, 2016, she was elected as the first woman coadjutor of the Diocese of Huron (in London , Ontario). On November 1, 2016, she succeeded Diocesan Bishop Robert Bennett .

Linda Nicholls was elected first female primate of the Anglican Church of Canada on July 13, 2019. Her installation to succeed Frederick James Hiltz and 14th Primate took place three days later at Christ Church Cathedral in Vancouver . As a result, she had to leave her bishopric in London within three months.
