Frederick James Hiltz (* 1954 in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) is a Canadian theologian and was Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada from 2007 to 2019 .

Life

Hiltz grew up in his native Dartmouth and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Dalhousie University in 1975 . In 1978 he received his Master of Divinity from the Atlantic School of Theology. Hiltz received an honorary doctorate from the University of King's College, Halifax in 2002 .

He was ordained a deacon on June 3, 1977, and a priest on June 29, 1978. In the years that followed, Hiltz worked as an Anglican priest in various parishes , including Christ Church in Sydney, Melford-Guyborough in Timberlea-Lakeside, The Cathedral Church of All Saints in Halifax and St. John's Church in Lunenburg.

In 2002 he was elected bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Since 2006 he has been a member of the Anglican Lutheran International Commission. The newspaper The Guardian described him as a bishop with more liberal inclinations. Hiltz is a moderate, liberal theologian who, among other things, supported the blessing of same-sex couples at the general synod of his church. Hiltz followed his predecessor Andrew Hutchison as a primate in 2007 . Linda Nicholls became his successor on July 16, 2019 .

Hiltz has been married for over 30 years and has a son, Nathan, who works as a jazz guitarist and music teacher in Toronto.
