Link station
LinkStation refers to a range of products for network data storage (NAS) from Buffalo Technology , which consists of a small, proprietary computer system and one, two or four hard drives . The small dimensions of the device as well as one or two existing USB 2.0 ports make the system a versatile piece of hardware.
The device is delivered with a GNU / Linux , but the end user usually only perceives the services that can be configured via the web interface, such as FTP , Windows sharing services , UPnP-compliant media server, print server, Bit Torrent client, support for Time Machine .
LinkStations are currently available in different versions with up to 12 TB storage capacity. All but the original LinkStation (1 or 2) support 1000BASE-T .
Terastation
The company's next larger line of NAS products is called the Terastation . The current models (as of 2011) are equipped with up to eight hard drives and thus achieve capacities of currently up to 24 TB.

Firmware
The special thing about the LinkStation is that the existing system can be replaced by a Linux with open source code under the GPL . In this way, for example, the Debian or Gentoo Linux distributions can be installed on the device with all their advantages. The device can thus be upgraded to a full-fledged Linux server and expanded with a limited number of USB devices (such as printers , hard drives , sound and ISDN cards, etc.). The addition of the NFS support missing in the original firmware is also interesting.
