Lino Guzzella

Lino Guzzella (born October 13, 1957 in Zurich ) is a Swiss-Italian engineer . Since 1999 he has been a full professor for thermotronics at the ETH Zurich . Between 2012 and 2014 he was rector of the university and in January 2015 he replaced Ralph Eichler as president of ETH Zurich. From January 2019 Joël Mesot took over this position.

Career

Guzzella studied mechanical engineering at the ETH Zurich and received his doctorate in 1986. He then went into industrial research at Sulzer AG in Winterthur and later took over the management of the development department for mechatronics at Hilti in Schaan , Principality of Liechtenstein. In 1993 he became an assistant professor at the ETH Zurich in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering. His research work initially focused on the optimization of internal combustion engines . Guzzella has been a full professor in his field since 1999. He researches the modeling and dynamic optimization of energy conversion systems in order to reduce consumption and pollutant emissions.

In 2011, Guzzella was awarded the “Golden Owl” for his lectures by students in his field at ETH Zurich.
