He then worked as a researcher at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). From 1997 to 1999 he was at the Argonne National Laboratory and the University of Illinois, Chicago , USA. He then returned to the Paul Scherrer Institute as a group leader, where he became head of the laboratory for neutron scattering from 2004 . Three years later he was elected director of the institute. In 2007 he was awarded a titular professorship at the ETH Zurich and in 2008 a double professorship in Zurich and at the EPF in Lausanne. Others

Joël Mesot is the first French President of ETH Zurich in over a hundred years. Federal Councilor Schneider-Ammann called this a “bridge building” and spoke of Mesot as an “integrating personality”, since he was anchored in the research of two parts of the country. The challenges in this office include maintaining the top global position of ETH, especially with respect to emerging universities in Asia, promoting further funding from the federal government and third parties, promoting the expansion of the Hönggerberg campus and dealing with internal problems such as bullying and lack of support that became known in 2018 .

Mesot is entitled to reside in Fiaugères and speaks French, German, English and Spanish.

Honors

In 2002, Mesot received the Latsis Prize from the ETH Zurich and in 1995 the IBM Prize from the Swiss Physical Society (SPG).
