The Lipsia Fountain (2011)

The Lipsia-Brunnen (also Putten-Brunnen ) is an ornamental fountain in the city center of Leipzig .

Location and shape

The Lipsia fountain is located on the small triangular square that is created by the sloping confluence of the Kleine Fleischergasse with the Barefoot Alley. This puts it across from the historic Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum restaurant , the oldest café in Germany.

The fountain is made of red granite . From a lower basin about five meters in diameter rises on a mighty column with four bearded male faces, a second basin and above, further tapered, a third. Under this stand four naked boys, holding hands, seeking protection from the water overflowing from the upper basin, which comes from a small fountain.

The fountain was praised as “a telling example of the concept of an organic connection between architecture and sculpture”.

history

As part of a competition to beautify the city, the doctor and sculptor Max Lange , who was then working in Leipzig, designed this fountain in 1913 and won first prize with it. It was initially planned to set it up on the Naschmarkt . It is not known why this did not happen. It eventually came to its current location.

The name of the fountain was initially Puttenbrunnen. In art , nude depictions of children are called putti , there are wings and angels too. But these are missing here. Because of the Lipsia House to the west of the fountain, the name Lipsia fountain became established and is now officially valid. Lipsia is the Latin name for Leipzig. In the local building regulations for Leipzig city center of 1991, the fountain was guaranteed a monument protection.
