Lisa Lavie (2009)

Lisa Lavie (born May 6, 1983 ) is a Canadian singer and songwriter who grew up in LaSalle, a district of the city of Montreal , Québec , Canada .

She became widely known for using the internet to market her independent music label, music and concerts. Lavie's vocal recordings can be heard in the soundtracks of major film productions. The first album Everything or Nothing , produced under their independent label, was released in 2008.

Lavie was heard and seen several times on Canadian and American television as part of the success of her singing video on the Internet and the benefit video recordings she initiated, We Are the World 25 for Haiti (YouTube Edition) .

Lavie was chosen as the singer for Yanni's South American tour in September 2010.

Childhood and discovery

At the age of 10, Lisa won a singing competition at a variety show at her school. Lavie's older brother Michael, a hip-hop dancer, and Danny, a disk jockey known in the Montréal area as DJ Devious, were her inspiration for the family. She herself says she loves listening to pieces by Mariah Carey .

At the age of 16, she took part in the role of a supporting voice on the tour of the hip-hop group Dubmatique, where she performed in front of thousands. Also at the age of 16 she recorded her first demo CD, which she paid for with self-saved $ 5000. The demo CD was passed around in the music industry for years. She worked on the fringes of the music business until she was 19, co-owner and manager of Harmony Karaoke in Montréal.

In 2004 her demo CD was received by composer and songwriter Ben Margulies, a co-producer of Mariah Carey's first album. Margulies was touched by what he said was the "one in a million" voice: "It was like hearing Mariah for the first time." Lisa initially thought that Margulies' first attempts at contact were jokes from her friends who played with Mariah Carey's childhood enthusiasm. Three months later, Lisa and Margulies finally came into contact.

After Lavie sang her song "Guys are all the same" to Margulies over a public telephone in a department store in Montreal, Margulies said, "I heard something special in her voice, I said, fly over there right now." Lavie later wrote, "I couldn't believe Mariah Carey's producer discovered me. I don't think I heard any other music than Mariah Carey between the ages of 10 and 17. I was fascinated by her voice and melodies." A planned three-day visit to Santa Barbara, California in July 2004 turned into a permanent move for 21-year-old Lavie.

Career start

Early on, Ben Margulies commented on Lavie's potential: "Lisa undoubtedly has a brilliant voice and a voice quality that is beyond what I can describe. I've worked with a lot of great singers and she has that little bit extra, something Special, everything it takes to become a superstar. Every video she takes shows her glow from the bottom of her heart, with that incredible expression of belief and credibility. " Lisa developed her songwriting skills; her texts, she says, are based on her own life experiences.

Professional career

Lavie played songs from the soundtrack of the 2006 movie Stick It with Jeff Bridges ("If I Only Knew") and in The Guardian with Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher (song: "Mockingbird"). In August 2006, Lavie signed as a songwriter and publicist with Broadcast Music Inc, which marked her formal entry into the profession. It was featured in the "Hitmakers Section" of BMI MusicWorld Magazine in spring 2007. Lisa Laviee attended the 56th Annual BMI Pop Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on May 20, 2008 in Beverly Hills, California and attended the 2008 Spirit of Life Award dinner in honor of Doug Morris on October 16, 2008 , which takes place in Santa Monica.

Even after her film music recordings, her career breakthrough failed to materialize. Her work was primarily based on personal contacts with the media and record companies. Lavie described the industry's praises as enthusiastic but noncommittal, with the result that Lavie and Margulies had to record their first album with an independent record label.

Do-it-yourself marketing

In March 2007 Lisa Lavie opened an account on Youtube that was linked to her MySpace page. She said she didn't think her self-made video rendering would serve her career. She posted her own videos singing her own songs, including two videos where she sang in the car. She continuously gained subscribers to her channel. During the first 6 months she tried to personally respond to all comments. This was her undoing on September 11, 2007. The YouTube software interpreted its many responses to viewer comments as bot-generated spam and automatically blocked its account. Her YouTube fans then initiated an online petition, and Lavie's account was reactivated two days after it was blocked. Weeks after their channel was restored, the video rendition of their original song "Angel" was featured on the front page of Youtube and drew over a million viewers within days. During the days around October 3rd when the "Angel" video drew its millionth viewer, Lavie was in constant conversation in a chat room. However, it was no longer possible for her to respond to every viewer comment. The "Angel" video alone had over 10,000 viewer comments when it broke the 1 million viewer mark.

In October 2007, Lavie was dubbed an "Internet Singing Sensation" and "Internet Phenomenon" on the television show "Entertainment Tonight (ET) Canada" and was referred to as "the next Mariah Carey". The following month, CTV's "eTalk" program featured "music stars" like Lavie " getting to the top on their own terms." In this TV phone interview, Lavie explained that in today's music business, artists need to create their own audiences in order to gain the trust of nervous record labels.

Over the years, the number of subscribers to Lisa Lavie's YouTube channel grew to 251,000 in September 2011. At that time, her songs had been heard 61.8 million times. On average, one song was heard from her every 2.3 seconds.

Debut album - Everything or Nothing

After 4 years of production, Lisa Lavie's debut album Everything or Nothing was released for download on iTunes on May 13, 2008 ; it was featured in the What's Hot section on the iTunes front page. Without support or application from a record label, the album reached No. 20 on the iTunes Pop Charts and No. 70 on the entire iTunes Music Charts on the second day. On the first anniversary of the release of their album in May 2009, the number of their YouTube subscribers tripled to over 60,000. She is the author or co-author of all the lyrics and melodies on the album, three of which she wrote entirely by herself. She says about it, "I've written songs about my life and existence, everything I've been through. I didn't create a specific style, it's like a kind of seasons. Most of my songs are about relationships. For some reason, it seems I draw my creativity from this. "

Independent artist

In an interview in March 2010, Lisa Lavie stated that "I no longer work with whoever I have worked with before. This is a pleasant change of direction for me. Things were developing in an exciting way." Regarding record deals, she added: "I'm an independent artist ... it should definitely fit and I haven't found anything suitable so far, which is why I've been doing everything myself so far. I will focus on creating and building an online fan base . "

People of the week

Lavie designed, organized, sang and co-edited the benefit video recordings We Are the World 25 for Haiti (YouTube edition), based on the original 1985 song We Are the World . It brought together fifty-seven people from around the world to raise funds for the victims of the 2010 Haiti earthquake . The video was viewed 500,000 times in the first two days and gained media attention worldwide: CNN aired several television shows featuring the video, and on March 19, 2010, Diane Sawyer named the video participants " ABC News Persons of the Week ".

On tour

On September 13, 2010, Lisa Lavie was featured on Yanni 's official website as one of two singers who will accompany Yanni and his orchestra on his tour of South America. Part of the tour are appearances in Santiago (Chile), Buenos Aires (Argentina), São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (both Brazil). The vocal rehearsal was reportedly "the deciding factor" in Yanni's choice of two singers. They sing "Aria" and "Niki Nana" together.
