Political career

Madigan was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1998 , to which she served until 2002. In 2002 she ran for the Democrats for the office of Attorney General of Illinois and narrowly won the election to succeed Jim Ryan against the Republican candidate Joe Birkett . She is the first woman in this position. In 2006 she was re-elected with a large majority. She is considered a possible future candidate for the governorship of Illinois and was at times named as the successor to Barack Obama in the United States Senate . In July 2009, however, she announced that she would not run for governor or for Obama's former seat in the Senate in 2010. Instead, she wants to run for a third term as Attorney General of Illinois. After Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald accused the Democratic Governor of Illinois, Rod Blagojevich , of corruption in December 2008 - including seeking consideration for the appointment of a successor to Obama in the US Senate - Madigan petitioned the Illinois Supreme Court, Blagojevich provisionally dismissed from office, as he was no longer able to exercise his office. However, this application was rejected by the court. Later Blagojevich was impeached by a unanimous decision of the State Senate.
