List of members of the Utagawa School
This article contains a list of the Japanese artists who, as members of the Utagawa school in the style of ukiyo-e , drew designs for color and woodcuts during the late Edo period to the end of the Meiji period , and who in some cases also worked as painters .
Naming
The naming of the individual artists was not uniform. Only the artists of the second generation formed their names from the first kanji of their teacher and a further kanji (e.g. Toyoharu and Toyohiro). The artists from the third generation formed their name predominantly from the second kanji of the teacher and added another one at the end (e.g. Toyokuni and Kunisada ). In a few cases, however, the first kanji , "toyo", was still used to form names (e.g. Toyokuni and Toyoshige). As a variant, there was also the use of the second kanji of the teacher's name as the second kanji of the student's name (e.g. Toyohiro and Naohiro).
Occasionally the names without numbering were used by different artists in different periods (e.g. Kunichika or Kunihisa). It was also possible to use the same names that were written with different kanji (e.g. Hiromasa ( 広 昌 ) and Hiromasa ( 広 政 )).
When the teacher died, withdrew from artistic life or changed the teacher's name, his stage name was often passed on to a preferred student, so that individual names are numbered consecutively (e.g. Kuniteru I, II and III). The numbering was partly done later by different authors who dealt with the Japanese color, woodcut (e.g. Kunimasa I. to Kunimasa V.).
The sequence in which the name Toyokuni is used is particularly confusing. After the death of Toyokuni I. The name went on Toyoshige I. over. After his death it was not used for almost ten years, only to be taken over by Kunisada I. Kunisada I called himself Toyokuni II from 1844 and ignored the fact that Toyoshige was the second bearer of this name. His adoptive son-in-law Kunimasa III was allowed to use his own name, Kunisada, from around 1850. wear, who thus became Kunisada II . From around 1870 onwards, Kunisada II called himself Toyokuni III. and passed the name Kunisada on to Kunimasa IV. The latter then signed as Kunisada III. However, he did not use the name Toyokuni, although this is sometimes claimed. In the literature, however, the following is counted continuously:
- Toyokuni I.
- Toyoshige I. / Toyokuni II.
- Kunisada I / Toyokuni III.
- Kunimasa III. / Kunisada II. / Toyokuni IV.
- Kunimasa IV. / Kunisada III. / Kōchōrō / Hōsai.
Some of the names used by the members of the Utagawa School were also used by artists from other schools (e.g. Toyonobu, Shigeharu, Kunihiro and others), so the stage name alone is not sufficient for identification, but the school name is added to the exact designation got to.
Notes on the list
Founder: Utagawa Toyoharu I. ( 歌 川 豊 春 ; 1735–1814)
In the left column are the names of the students of Toyoharu I., on the right indented those of their respective students. For example, in the first column from the left, Toyohiro is the teacher from Hirochika to Toyokuma in the second column. Hiroshige I in the second column is a teacher from Hirokage to Shigeyoshi in the third column, Shigenobu in the third column is a teacher from Risshō II to Hiroshige IV, etc.
As far as is known, the dates of the artists' lives or at least the times of their artistic activity are given. If no dates are given, this usually means that the names are only given in the literature and that there is no evidence of any work by the artist that can be dated to some extent.
The list also includes a few specially marked women's names. As daughters, they had received drawing lessons from their fathers and they were occasionally able to draw cartouche pictures for the work of their fathers and sign them independently. Yoshitori, a daughter of Kuniyoshi, illustrated several books on her own. Only Meirindō Kakuju-jo, the student of Sadakame-jo, was able to publish some prints under her name in the years 1861-63.
The list is not complete. Fifth generation artists are only partially listed, those of the sixth generation are completely omitted.
Around half of the names given are not mentioned in Western literature. They come from a Japanese Internet project, the ukiyo-e-shi sōran ( 浮世 絵 師 総 覧 , "Complete bibliography of ukiyoe artists").
