From 1901 to 1944

After the outbreak of World War I, Roubaix was occupied by the German army on October 14, 1914 and was under the military administration of Lieutenant Colonel Hoffmann until October 17, 1918. The mayor Jean-Baptiste Lebas was arrested during this period because he had refused to hand over the list of 18-year-old residents to the occupiers so that they could be sent to Germany for forced labor. However, he was released.

During the Second World War , a large part of the population fled (only 15,000 people remained in the city), including the mayor Lebas, who was in office during his second term. His deputy Fleuris Vanherpe took over the post temporarily, while Lebas returned and organized the local Resistance groups. Both were arrested and deported in 1941 and died in German captivity.
