Miesbach

Miesbach town center ensemble

File number: E-1-82-125-1

The ensemble encompasses the core area, the settlement mentioned in a document in the 11th century, which in the late Middle Ages developed into a rural market town in the foothills of the Alps and the center of power for the Free Imperial Counties of Hohenwaldeck, which died out in 1734, and which was elevated to a town in 1918.

Wallenburg Castle by Michael Wening

The settlement first developed on the town square, formerly called Oberer Markt, a plateau sloping to the west directly below the oldest Miesbacher Burgberg, whose fortifications were destroyed by the Lords of Waldeck in 1312. The salt road from Rosenheim to Tölz probably already ran through this square, which passed the castle complex when entering the village and then led further west towards the valley floor and the Schlierach crossing, where the salt barn was until 1819. In an east-west direction, the waters of the Miesbach flowed openly across the square until 1824, and then flowed north through Ledererstrasse towards the Schlierach. In the late Middle Ages, the layout of the town square, into which the street of Schliersee, another center of the lords of Waldeck, ran from the south, was probably completed. In 1926 the square was straightened.

View from the electoral market in Miesbach, around 1805

The historic development of Miesbach is mostly irregular, loose and open. The historical house type, mostly former craftsmen's houses, guest houses and also farmhouses, follows the type of the rural surroundings, two-storey, with a protruding flat gable roof, but without an arbor, possibly with a high arbor. In the course of the reconstruction after the great fire in 1783, a large number of similar plastered flat gable roof buildings were built. Up until the 1950s there were revisions in the form of the Heimat style. Before the big fire, however, the urban development focus was clearly on the former Upper Market, which was dominated by the palace, which was newly built in the 17th century north of the oldest castle square, and in whose square the baroque stately buildings of the so-called Anwartshaus and the electoral brewery dominated. The former Obere Markt was closed off by an archway up until 1874 against the castle and the Rosenheimer Salzstraße, which flows into the square from the east. Since 1783, the successor to the Bräuhaus, the stately hip roof corner building of the Waitzingerbräu, has been the dominant building. The other buildings are mostly former ones that were created in connection with the market traffic, the salt transport and the once flourishing Miesbacher Marienwallfahrt, z. Some three-storey inns, between which, since around 1875, commercial buildings of urban layout with baroque facades have been built.

The Michaelsbrunnen from 1905 and the linden trees set a characteristic accent for the time of the Prince Regent in the square. The area of the former lower market, today market square, has gable-side buildings, in the south adjoining Marktwinkl loose, z. T. staggered construction with differently directed gable positions. Its northern part, the small, intimate Marienplatz, was separated from the main part in post-medieval times by the interspersed development on Fraunhoferstrasse, in Heimbucher- and Mannhartswinkl.

The historical house type still dominates in this area; These are former farms and houses of the formerly important Miesbach guild craftsmen - blacksmiths, hat makers, sackers, shepherds and the like. a. - as well as the houses of the miners. On the western border of the ensemble there are also commercial buildings from the turn of the century and, from the more recent times, department stores that unfortunately have only insufficiently taken into account the townscape.

Lebzelterberg, Kirchgasse and Pfarrgasse, as short, sloping streets, create a direct connection between the two markets; they have largely been able to retain their historical character. The most important connection between the upper and lower town is the Ledererstraße, which extends in a wide arc to the north and follows the watercourse of the Miesbach; Until recently, the Lederer, the most important group of Miesbach craftsmen, had settled here. The formerly very narrow street, which continues in the Frühlingstraße, had a picturesque pageantry with its tanner workshops and the typical arbours of the tanner houses until the middle of the 20th century. The former character as a craftsmen's quarter is made particularly clear by the Gerberhaus Ledererstraße 6. This area is dominated by the early classicist building of the parish church that towers above the elevated cemetery. The ensemble includes the historical development of part of Schmiedgasse, Schlierseer Straße and Salzweg in the vicinity of the town square; Unfortunately, the directly adjacent high-rise Salzweg 4 is a sensitive disruption here.

Of essential importance for the historical townscape is the roof landscape, which only knows the flat protruding gable roof for the rural and mostly also for the craftsman's house, while official buildings and similar buildings are consistently through steep roofs, e.g. Marked out partly in a hipped shape (cf. Kirchgasse 6, Kolpingstraße 4, Tölzer Straße 1; before its redesign, also the rectory, Pfarrgasse 4). Ground floor Baroque mansard roof building with arbor, studio window and entrance portico, around 1910.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The monument property - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the monument atlas or the entry in the Bavarian monument list. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
