history

Miesbach and "Burg Waldenburg" , drawing by Philipp Apian from the 16th century

Wallenburg Castle is first mentioned in 1270, but it is likely to be older. The topographical conditions (remnants of ramparts and ditch systems) could indicate a correspondingly higher age. Wallenburg (originally Waldenberg ) was since the 15th century the headquarters of the rule of Waldeck (later Grafschaft Hohenwaldeck ), ruled by the Maxlrainer dynasty, until it passed to Bavaria in 1734. After that, partial neglect and changing owners, including the Gumppenberg and Fohr families . From the family goose it came by inheritance to the family of Kameke .

description

After a fire in 1467 a new castle was built, which was partly rebuilt in the second half of the 17th century. Only the south wing with the knight's hall stuccoed by Johann Baptist Zimmermann is preserved . The remaining parts with the keep and castle chapel (Hl. Three Kings) were demolished at the beginning of the 19th century.

meaning

Besides Castle Valley, Wallenburg Castle is the only castle complex from the high Middle Ages that is still in use in the Miesbach district and one of the few in the Bavarian Oberland. Another seat of the Counts of Hohenwaldeck was Maxlrain Castle . The seats in Altenwaldeck , Holnstein , Miesbach and Parsberg have disappeared . Hohenwaldeck Castle above the Schliersee still exists as a ruin.
