Altenwaldeck Castle is an abandoned hilltop castle at 600 m above sea level. NN am Auer Berg near Niklasreuth in the municipality of Irschenberg in the area of the border with the municipality of Bad Feilnbach in Bavaria .
history
Altenwaldeck Castle may have been the ancestral seat of the Lords of Waldeck , who became imperial with their rule of Waldeck in the 15th century .
There is no documentary evidence of the origin of the Spornburg , but the founders of the Schliersee Monastery (779) are always associated with the Waldeckers. The castle, originally called Waldeck , appeared as early as the 13th century under the name that is still used today. In addition to Altenwaldeck, the family had other seats in Parsberg , Hohenwaldeck , Miesbach , Wallenburg and Höllenstein (Holnstein) above Brannenburg .
In 1497 Altenwaldeck came by inheritance to the Seyboltsdorf family, after which it was temporarily named Seyboltsburg . In 1603 the castle came into civil ownership and, according to tradition, was used as a quarry for the construction of the nearby church of Au bei Bad Aibling .
Situation and today's situation
The castle stable shows only a few remains of the wall, such as the foundation walls of the main castle . The wall and ditch system can also still be seen. The Burgstall is accessible by a hiking trail and is located east below Niklasreuth and west above Au near Bad Aibling on a mountain spur .
