Wall of the Fentbach ski jump

The Fentbach-Schanze is a Celtic oppidum near Weyarn in the Miesbach district in Upper Bavaria . The classification as an oppidum ( Paul Reinecke 1930) goes back to the finds in the entire interior.

location

The ski jump is located in the municipality of Weyarn around 600 m northwest of the village of Fentbach on a plateau nose between the Mangfall and Moosbach valleys .

investment

The ski jump is a section fortification in the form of a trapezoid , which measures around 500 m in north-south direction and 375 m in east-west direction. In the north and west it is protected by steep drops, some of which are rocky. The east side drops off relatively steeply towards the Moosbach. The south side is protected by a mighty rampart that slopes steeply to the south and has a winding course. Today the plateau is mainly used as grassland. The difference in altitude from south to north is around 40 m. It has not been clarified whether the "pre-wall" around 300 m south of the wall is an artificial system or a natural embankment.

exploration

In November 1877, Hauptmann a. D. Ludwig Auer , who initially viewed the ski jump as part of an "entrenched camp" located in Mangfallknie, but wrongly included high medieval earthworks such as the " Birg " near Kleinhöhenkirchen in this section . In 1964 a few more sherds were found, some of which could be dated to the late Latène period .

Finds

From Auer's excavations, an iron spike, a clay vessel that can be reconstructed from shards, the edge shards of a graphite clay vessel and another clay vessel as well as shards from three other clay vessels have been preserved. An iron device (possibly a meat hook) is missing, as is a millstone, of which, however, there is a drawing in the local files of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . In 1964, various edge shards, a bottom shard and numerous shards of other vessels were found.
