The Grafschaft Valley , today part of the Miesbach district in Upper Bavaria , was a Hofmark until 1848 , i. H. a manorial rule with sovereign powers. Of the two castles located close together, only the younger is still in the hands of the count. The older one is architecturally more significant and also houses parts of an organ museum of world importance.

The County (Hofmark) Valley

The County Valley is first mentioned in 920 in the possession of a Count of Sempt . From the first third of the 12th century, a hilltop castle existed as a manor on the castle hill above the Mangfall , of which only the remains of the wall have survived.

The old castle was built in the second half of the 12th century in the valley near the village of Unterdarching .

After several changes of ownership, Wilhelm IV. Von Maxlrain (* around 1590, † 1658) acquired the Hofmark Valley and founded the brewery that still exists today. In 1740 his heirs built the New Palace in the immediate vicinity of the old one. After a fire, it was later rebuilt in a modified form and now also houses the brewery. Hofmark, and with it the New Castle, has been owned by the Counts of Arco auf Valley since the 19th century . In 1848 the sovereign powers over the Hofmark expired, but as the castle and landowner the family still has great influence on the site.

Brewing was temporarily suspended in 1994 and resumed in 2017.

The old castle at Valley

The Old Castle is the older part of the Valley Castle Complex. Up until 1848 it was the care office and court house for over 700 years . In essence, it dates from the late 12th century and in the years 1189 to 1192 as "castrum Ualeia" in Traditionsbuch of Schäftlarn mentioned in documents. The imposing south gable was built around 1200. After the New Palace was built, it was retained and expanded from 1776 to 1778. After 1848 it served as a restaurant for more than 100 years . In 1895 parts were broken off.

The writer Michael Ende lived in the old castle from 1965 to 1971 and wrote his novel Momo here, published in 1973 and made into a film in 1986 .

In 1987 Otto Arco sold the empty old castle on Valley to the district home keeper of the Miesbach district and former chief curator in the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation Sixtus Lampl and his wife Inge, who saved it from deterioration through extensive renovation measures.

Today the Valley Organ Center is located in the old castle and the neighboring Zollingerdach Hall . With more than 60 organs, it is the largest collection of its kind in the world.

Also the Castle Valley Publishing has its headquarters in the building.
