ROHEMA (short for Ro bert He llinger Ma rkneukirchen) is a German company, batons , sticks for percussion instruments and percussion instruments produced. It is a family business in the fifth generation and the oldest still existing baton factory in the world. Rohema (spelling: ROHEMA Percussion) was founded in 1888 by Robert Eduard Hellinger and is now run by his great-great-grandchildren Maik and Tobias Hellinger. The company is based in Markneukirchen in Saxony .

history

Robert Eduard Hellinger began producing baton and drumsticks in his woodturning workshop in 1888 , while most of his competitors concentrated mainly on turning pegs for string instruments . His sons Robert and Arthur also learn the woodworking trade in their father's workshop. When the two were supposed to take over the company, there was a falling out. While Robert continued to operate under the name of ROHEMA, his brother founded AHELMA ( A rthur Hel linger Ma rkneukirchen) at the other end of town and also made batons and drumsticks. Arthur's son Erich gave up the company in the 1980s.

Robert Hellinger's eldest son - also a turner - was supposed to take over the workshop, but fell like his younger brother in World War II . The youngest son Armin became an apprentice in his father's company, made his master's degree in 1949 and took over the company in the late 1950s.

Together with his two sons Andreas and Matthias, he managed Rohema during the GDR era. The company escaped nationalization , but was only allowed to sell its products through state organizations. Customer contact, especially in the West, broke off. In 1980 Armin's sons Andreas and Matthias took over the management together.

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, they produced drumsticks for other brands with four employees, visited international music fairs and revitalized old and new sales structures as well as old customer contacts. At the end of the 1990s, new employees were hired and the fifth generation joined the company. Andreas 'son Tobias began his apprenticeship as a wood turner in 1999, followed by Matthias' son Maik in 2006 after completing his business studies degree. In the summer of 2019, the fathers handed over their company shares to the sons.

Today (as of 2020) the company employs over 30 people. In 2014 the production area was expanded by a new building. In 2019, Rohema invested in a new building in the Markneukirchen business park for 2.8 million euros. Like many others, the company introduced short-time working during the 2020 economic crisis .

Drumsticks

ROHEMA drumsticks, rods and brushes

Rohema is the largest manufacturer of drum sticks in Europe. The range includes over 50 different drumstick models as well as various rods and brooms for drums, cajón and percussion. In a selection process, stick pairs are sorted according to weight and tone. Drum sticks are from American Hickory , North American Maple (maple), Horn Wood, hornbeam and Jatoba made of wood. The sticks (except for the Natural series) are coated with a thin layer of lacquer. The aim is to maintain the natural feel of the wood, while still protecting it from external influences and material abrasion.

Well-known drumstick endorsers from Rohema include:
