List of bishops of the Faroe Islands

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Since the Christianization of the Faroe Islands around 1000, the islands have been under the Archbishop of Bremen . The diocese of Faroe Islands was established by 1100 at the latest . From 1104 it was suffragan of Lund and from 1152 of Nidaros (Trondheim) .

With the introduction of the Reformation in Denmark-Norway , the diocese became Lutheran . It was canceled as early as 1556 when the first Lutheran bishop Jens Riber moved to the bishopric of Stavanger. The Faroers now became the provost within the Bjørgvin diocese (Bergen) . When Norway separated from Denmark in 1814, the Faroe Islands became part of the church of the Diocese of Zealand and had belonged to the Diocese of Copenhagen since 1922 . In 1990 the Faroe Islands became an independent diocese again within the Danish People's Church , which as such only existed until 2007. Since then, the Faroese People's Church has existed , which is also headed by a bishop.
