The diocese of Bova is mentioned in the 11th and 12th centuries in the Notitiae episcopatuum together with Oppido and Tres Tabernae (later Catanzaro ) as a suffragan of Reggio Calabria . Bova belonged to the Greek rite until 1573, so the bishops were usually members of the Greek language group.
