List of International Masters (Awarded 1956)

Friðrik Ólafsson was President of FIDE from 1978 to 1982 and played for the Icelandic B national team at the age of 80.

The list of International Masters of 1956 lists all chess players who received the title of International Masters in 1956 from the World Chess Federation FIDE . As in previous years, the award was based on the outstanding tournament and competition results of the respective players.

In January 2016, Andreas Dückstein , Friðrik Ólafsson and Wolfgang Uhlmann , three of the eight players honored at the time, are still alive. Two of the eight players later reached the title of grandmaster , Olga Rubzowa was awarded the newly created title of women's grandmaster in 1976 .

Legend

The table contains the following information:

  • Name : gives the name of the player.
  • Country : Name the country for which the player was eligible to play in 1956.
  • Life data : states the year of birth and, if applicable, the year of death of the player.
  • GM : Indicates the year of award for players who were later promoted to grandmasters.
  • Other associations : For players who were sooner or later eligible to play for at least one other association, this indicates these associations with the periods of eligibility to play (if known). Direct changes to a successor state are not taken into account.
