List of prehistorians at the University of Jena

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of prehistorians at the University of Jena includes all the professors who have taught at the University of Jena , since 1934 Friedrich Schiller University. As a rule, this includes all regular university professors who were allowed to give lectures, i.e. who had completed their habilitation . These are in particular full professorships , extraordinary professors , visiting professors , honorary professors , chair representatives and private lecturers . Mid-level archaeologists (lecturers: assistants and employees ) are only included in justified exceptional cases.

Jena is one of the first universities in Germany to offer prehistory and early history as a subject. Friedrich Klopfleisch , who taught art history as a private lecturer from 1859, also offered "Archaeological Excursions" and "Archaeological Exercises" at irregular intervals. From 1894 onwards he dealt exclusively with prehistoric archeology in his courses. The Germanic Museum of the University of Jena was founded as early as 1863 . Klopfleisch's student Alfred Götze (1865-1948) received his doctorate in 1890 with one of the first prehistoric dissertations.

After Klopfleisch's death in 1898, teaching in prehistory and early history initially broke off, while the museum continued to exist. From 1900, the collection was taken care of on a voluntary basis by Klopfleisch's pupil Gustav Eichhorn . In 1918 he took over the management of the "Prehistoric (formerly so-called German.) Museum". At the same time, at the request of the Faculty of Philosophy, he was given permission to hold lectures on prehistory. In 1926, the Philosophical Faculty created the right to award doctorates in the major and minor prehistory and early history. In 1927 Eichhorn, who died two years later, was awarded the title of full honorary professor for his commitment.

In 1930, the management of the Germanisches Museum was transferred to Eichhorn's former student Gotthard Neumann . From the winter semester 1930/31 he offered courses again as a volunteer assistant at the historical seminar. In 1934 Neumann was made a permanent professor for prehistory. Shortly before the end of the Second World War, he was appointed full professor with effect from February 1, 1945, although he was unable to hold this position.

After the Second World War, university training in prehistory and early history at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena was resumed in 1947 by Günther Behm- (Blanke) . A “professorship with a chair” (corresponds to a full professorship) was established in 1956 and filled with Gotthard Neumann. In accordance with the requirements of the Third University Reform of the GDR, training as a specialist scientist was discontinued in 1968 in Jena as well as in Leipzig and Greifswald. The teaching could be continued, but was now geared towards the training of history teachers. In 1991 teaching was resumed in the main subject Prehistory and Protohistory.

The first column shows the name of the person and their life data, the second column shows entry into the university, and the third column shows their departure. Column four names the highest position achieved at the University of Jena. At other universities, the corresponding lecturer may have made an even more extensive scientific career. The next column lists special features, the career path or other information relating to the university or institute. The last column shows pictures of the lecturers, which is currently difficult due to the image rights.
