List of devastations in the Schmallenberg area
This list of deserted areas in the Schmallenberg area in the Hochsauerlandkreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ) shows the deserted areas near today's core town of Schmallenberg , which have been documented. Precise information about their location cannot always be given due to the lack of sources. The rural and rural character is common to all of the desert areas. Commercial settlements, which fell into desolation in the late Middle Ages, are not yet known in this area. The places fell victim to the great devastation process in the late Middle Ages . It must have been a creeping, slow process. The downfall of these urban settlements is probably connected with the development of the urban center of Schmallenberg. Another reason was plague epidemics and the need of the residents to seek refuge in the city.
