List of auxiliary bishops in Bremen

This list of the auxiliary bishops of Bremen shows all the auxiliary bishops in the Archdiocese of Hamburg-Bremen from 1285 to 1642 .

history

Auxiliary bishops, Latin episcopi auxiliaris, also called auxiliary bishops, are priests who have been ordained bishops but who do not lead their own diocese , but are available to the local bishop for ordinations ( confirmation, etc.). However, you receive a historical or perished diocese titular bishopric and the title titular bishop. In the Middle Ages and later, some (prince) bishops also had an auxiliary bishop at their side because they themselves occupied the benefices as princes, but did not have episcopal ordination and therefore necessarily needed an auxiliary bishop for the ordinations. As far as is known, the Archbishops of Bremen were ordained bishops. Some princely sons, such as Heinrich Graf von Schwarzburg, (1463–1496) and Christoph Herzog von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (1511–1558) were elected archbishop and coadjutor respectively in their youth. They could therefore not receive episcopal ordination because they had not yet reached the relevant canonical age of at least 30 years. Heinrich von Schwarzburg was 23 years old when he was elected and Christoph von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel was 24 when his predecessor Johann Rode died. Therefore, Rome initially only confirmed Heinrich von Schwarzburg as administrator. Since neither of them could operate without episcopal ordination, nor could they consecrate priests or bishops, nor consecrate altars, they had auxiliary bishops at their side.
