The origins of the castle go back to the 12th century. In 1645 the castle was surrendered to the Swedish field marshal Lennart Torstensson without a fight. He blew up the castle when he withdrew in 1645. From 1874 Johann Nepomuk Graf Wilczek gradually began to build a show castle, which, however, does not correspond in appearance to the former castle ("Romanesque-Gothic model castle"). However, the existing remains of the medieval castle (parts of the curtain wall, hull of the east tower and parts of the chapel) were included in the design. The official reopening took place on June 6, 1906 in the presence of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany .
