Raaberkreuz
The Raaberkreuz is the name given to wayside shrines that were erected after the Raab Fortress (Győr in today's Hungary) was recaptured in 1598, following a decree by Emperor Rudolf II . These Marterln often have slightly different names such as Raaber Kreuz , Rabakreuz or Turkenkreuz .
Historical background
Raab Fortress came into the possession of the Turks in 1594 through the betrayal of Count Hardegg . In 1598 the Habsburgs re-conquered them under the command of Prince Adolf von Schwarzenberg and Niklas II. Pálffy from Erdőd and pushed the Turks eastwards again, which was a great success during the Long Turkish War . In the following year Schwarzenberg was appointed Imperial Count .
Rudolf's decree read:
“We Rudolf the Other ( the second ), Roman Khayser, etc., elected by God, mercifully deny: Accordingly, by the grace of God, the vestung Raab will come into our hands ... we hereby recommend that you honor God and thanksgiving to streets, passports, people who fell over or who were torn down by malevolent people and iconoclasts, erect stainern or other Creutz and pet torture pillars in turn and have the following writing written on them with legible black letters: "
"Tell God the Lord Praise and Danck
that Raab will come again in the Christians Hand,
the ninth and twentieth Martii in 1598 - year."
The Raaberkreuz
With the text of the ordinance, numerous tabernacle shrines were erected in eastern Austria; but also old martyrs were extended with this or similar inscriptions.
