Heikki Westerinen was the first Finn to be appointed grandmaster in 1975.

The list of Finnish chess players contains chess players who are or were eligible to play for the Finnish Chess Federation and who meet at least one of the following conditions:

General

In local chess 5 grandmasters, 21 international masters and 2 international women champions are eligible to play for the Finnish Chess Federation. Two women's grandmasters and one international women's champion are no longer eligible to play for the Finnish Chess Federation, one honorary grandmaster and five international champions have already passed away.

In correspondence chess, 14 Finnish players have earned the title of Grand Master, 18 that of Merited International Master, 39 that of International Master and one of International Master of Women. Of these, four Grand Masters, two Merited International Masters and six International Masters have already passed away. Pertti Lehikoinen won the 20th World Correspondence Chess Championship.

The Finnish individual championship was played 80 times, the Finnish women's championship 53 times. The record champion is Kaarle Ojanen with 13 titles, Sirkka-Liisa Landry won the women's competition most often with 16 titles.
