Yrjö Rantanen

Yrjö Aukusti Rantanen (born April 23, 1950 in Tampere ) is a Finnish chess player . Since 1981 he has been the second Finn after Heikki Westerinen to hold the title of Grand Master .

With the Finnish national team he took part in nine chess Olympiads ( 1972 to 1986 and 1990 ). At the 1980 Chess Olympiad he received an individual gold medal for his result on the second board, he won individual bronze medals at the 1972 Chess Olympiad on the first reserve board and at the 1978 Chess Olympiad on the second board. He also joined Finland in the 1989 European team championship , where he achieved the third-best individual result on the sixth board. He won the Finnish individual championship in Helsinki in 1978 and in Pori in 1986, in 1976, 1982 and 1990 he was second and in 1972 third. With the club Fischer Helsinki he took part in the European Club Cup 1987/88. In 1977 he became International Master (IM) and then Grand Master (GM) in 1981. His Elo rating is 2300 (as of June 2016), which puts him in 27th place in the Finnish Elo ranking. His highest Elo rating to date was 2465 in July 1981, making him the top of the Finnish Elo ranking.
