Jouni Yrjölä

Jouni Yrjölä (born October 24, 1959 in Vilppula ) is a Finnish chess player and author.

He was able to win the Finnish individual championship twice : 1985 in Espoo and 1988 in Helsinki . In 1983 in Helsinki, 1991 in Tampere and 1995 in Helsinki he was second, in 1986 in Pori he was third.

With the Finnish national team he took part in the chess Olympiads in 1982 , 1984 , 1986 , 1988 , 1990 , 1992 , 1996 and 2000 with a positive overall result of 45 points from 84 games (+26 = 38 −20). In four participations in European team championships (1989, 1992, 1997 and 1999) his best result was the team's fourth place in 1989 in Haifa , where he played on the top board, and an individual bronze medal for his result of 5 out of 7 on the third board in 1999 in Batumi .

He plays club chess in Finland for the Gaia Helsinki club , with which he was Finnish team champion in the 2000/01 season (then still Garde Helsinki ) and 2003/04, as well as taking part in the 2004 European Club Cup on the top board. Before that he played at PSY Pori , with whom he won the team championship in 1986/87.

In 1984 Jouni Yrjölä received the title of International Master and has been a chess grandmaster since 1990 . Its Elo rating is 2322 (as of August 2019), its highest to date was 2515 in 1984.
