The Borstige gromwell ( Lithodora hispidula ) is a plant from the genus of Lithodora within the family Boraginaceae (Boraginaceae). The three or so subspecies are common in the eastern Mediterranean .

Vegetative characteristics
The bristle stone seed is a loosely branched dwarf shrub that reaches heights of 10–40 centimeters and can form large cushions. The bark of the twigs is pressed down with hairy white hairs.
The dark green, leathery leaves are narrow, ovate-elongated. They are loosely covered with protruding, short bristles standing on small bumps on the top and bristly pressed on the underside. They are prickly and bristly at the edge.
Generative characteristics
The flowering period is between February and May. The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The almost completely divided cup is bristly. The outside bare corolla is about 12 millimeters long, it is first white and later turns pink to blue. In the throat it is without hair or throat scales. Usually only a nut that is white and finely warty is formed.
Occurrence
The bristle stone seed occurs in the eastern Mediterranean from Libya and Crete to Turkey , Cyprus and the area of Syria and Lebanon . It thrives in the garigue and in pine forests.
Systematics
It was first described in 1806 under the name ( Basionym ) Lithospermum hispidulum by James Edward Smith in Florae Graecae Prodromus , 1, page 114. The new combination to Lithodora hispidula (Sm.) Griseb. was published in 1846 by August Grisebach in Spicilegium florae rumelicae et bithynicae ... 2, page 531, by placing them in the newly established genus Lithodora .
Depending on the author, there are about three subspecies of Lithodora hispidula :
- Lithodora hispidula subsp. cyrenaica (Pamp.) Brullo & Furnari (Syn .: Lithospermum hispidulum var. cyrenaicum Pamp. ): It occurs only in Libya.
- Lithodora hispidula (Sm.) Griseb. subsp. hispidula : It occurs in Crete, on islands in the Aegean Sea and in Turkey.
- Lithodora hispidula subsp. versicolor Meikle : It occurs in Cyprus, in Turkey and in the area of Lebanon and Syria.
