By acquiring many companies from a wide variety of industries, Litton Industries became the largest manufacturer of electronic control systems for aircraft in the 1960s, the second largest manufacturer of cash registers, and a leading manufacturer of calculating machines and manual typewriters in the United States. The German typewriter manufacturer Triumph-Adler was acquired in 1968.

Falling profits caused Litton Industries to streamline its corporate structure in the 1970s, so that in the 1980s the core business was again mainly focused on arms production. In 2001, Litton Industries was acquired by Northrop Grumman .
