The spring mullet ( Liza saliens ), also known as the little mullet , is a species of the mullet family and one of the 20 species in the genus Liza . This species is native to the eastern Atlantic , especially off the coast of France and Morocco , in the Mediterranean , in the Black Sea and in the Sea of Azov . It was introduced to Iran and is now also native to the Caspian Sea.
On average, these fish are about 30 centimeters tall and a maximum of 45 centimeters long. They weigh about 1.2 kilograms.
Way of life
These fish live near the coast in brackish water and in estuaries, where they form small schools and look for food. As herbivores, they filter plankton out of the water. Adult fish can also eat algae and detritus . They spawn in summer and young animals that have reached a maximum size of 3 centimeters only feed on plankton. When the animals reach a size of about 5 centimeters, they also eat other small organisms.
Importance to humans
Jumping mullets are popular food fish that are caught in the open sea and also kept in aquaculture . They are caught with gillnets and they are used commercially. You can use both the eggs and the meat. The meat of the fish can be found on the market, primarily fried or grilled.
