The Ljósavatn is a lake in the Norðurland eystra region in northern Iceland . It is located in the municipality of Þingeyjarsveit and is roughly halfway between Akureyri and Laugar .
geography
The approximately 3.2 km² large lake is located west of the Goðafoss waterfall and south of the Krossöxl in the Ljósavatnsskarð valley named after him . To the south-west of the lake is the Stóradalur and the mountain Stóradalsfjall , to the south-east is the Ljósavatnsfjall, named after the lake . The river Kambsá (also called Litlutjarnarlæk) flows into the lake from the west . The small river Geitá flows into the lake from the south . The main outflow of the lake is the Djúpá , which flows east to the Skjálfandafljót .
The church of Ljósavatnskirkja is located southeast of the lake . To the east of the lake, the Ljósavatnsá river flows from south to north.

The area is the setting for one of the Icelandic sagas , the Ljósvetninga saga (saga of the people of Ljósavatn).
use
The lake is used for fishing.

The Hringvegur , Iceland's most important traffic artery, runs directly on the north shore of the lake .
