Llanrhidian
Llanrhidian is a small town in the north of the Welsh Gower Peninsula in Great Britain; since 1970 Llanrhidian is a district of Swansea . The place is located on a ridge from which one can overlook the mouth of the River Loughor and the salt marshes in the north of the peninsula. The salt marshes extend between Crofty in the east and the western end called The Goose . Llanrhidian Sands beach forms the southern bank of the Loughor Estuary. To the west it borders on Whiteford Sands .
According to legend, the Church of St. Rhidian & St. Illtyd was founded by St Rhidian in the 6th century. The current building was erected in the 13th century, the choir and the massive west tower were added in the 14th century. The church was restored in the 19th century. In the past, the tower also served as a watchtower on which a beacon could be lit in the event of impending attacks from the sea. In the vestibule is the Leper Stone , which was excavated near the church in 1865. The stone with human and animal engravings is dated to the 9th or 10th century and could have been a Viking tombstone. There are two menhirs on the village green . The upper menhir was made into a Celtic cross and probably also served as a pillory . Until the beginning of the 20th century, the place was a center of the wool industry. The ruins of the Nether Mill with a mill pond and broken millstone as well as the remains of other wool mills are a reminder of the earlier importance.
In the woods below the village lies the desert of Llanelen , whose inhabitants, according to tradition, died of the plague brought in by stranded sailors. Between Llanrhidian and Llanmadoc is the fortified manor Weobley Castle , which can be visited.
